I'd called my Opthamologist a week or so ago to get a refill on my eye drops, only to be told she'd left that office. :dislike: They said they'd call me in the drops, but then later called me back to say it had been too long since my last appointment and I'd need to come in. I had no desire to change doctors, as my Opthamologist is one of my favorites (Dr. Tracy Schwartz, Madison AL), so I asked where she'd gone and was surprised when they not only told me, but told me she was still in the area. Of course, once I got off the phone I couldn't remember 100% where they had told me she'd gone, since there are several places with similar names in the area. As luck would have it they did go ahead and call in my refill on the eye drops. I still figured I needed to track her down and have me check her out. She and my Neuro have a tendency to bounce me back and forth when I'm having one of these cluster headaches (or whatever) and since I can't get in to see my Neuro till next month I figured I'd go ahead and see her and maybe I'd get lucky and she'd find something that would help me.
So, on Monday I finally called and tracked her down and luckily they were able to work me in on the same day. I was shocked when she checked my vision in the right eye. I'd not really noticed the vision loss this time. A lot of times with the clusters or migraines I will see a noticeable vision change, and I have occasionally with this one but not throughout. So, when she checked my right eye and I was struggling to make out the top line, I was quite surprised, and so was she. Now, granted the vision in my right eye is decreased pretty much every time I see her, because I almost always see her when I'm having one of these clusters. However, when I've seen her outside of the clusters my vision is better than 20/20 in both eyes (it still is in the left eye), thanks to LASIK surgery a decade ago. This was the worst it had been in all the times she'd seen me.
She continued to check me out and said that she did think it was a cluster and that she couldn't find any other issues going on. She also said I had an astigmatism, and that it seems to get more pronounced when my eyes are dry or when I'm having a headache, thus the vision issues. In the past she'd always said that since it was temporary AND since the adjustment was so slight that it wasn't worth writing a prescription. Even this time as she wrote it she said the change was so minor that was almost no prescription at all, however because my eyes were so good the slightest change could have an impact on me, and it could be helping these headaches go on longer than they should. She said she didn't know if giving me glasses would make the headache go away, but perhaps it would at least keep the intensity down.
I figured since light is my biggest issue and since I seem to feel worse when driving, that I'd at least get some prescription sunglasses. I've noticed my equilibrium is getting worse when driving, which could be caused by the vision issues. So, whatever I got I was getting them THAT day, because I had to do something. We finally tracked down a place that had the lenses in stock and could get them to me in an hour and headed over there. We ended up getting both sunglasses and ordering a regular pair; we had to order them in order to get anti-glare coating, which I felt was kinda necessary given the light issues.
I wore the sunglasses home and I noticed a definite difference in that with them on the light wasn't hurting me and I wasn't having the same level of equilibrium issues. So, hopefully once I have both pairs and can wear them somewhat regularly I'll see this headache disappear. At the very least, hopefully these will help keep it at a low level. It would be awesome if they disappeared, but I'm not counting on it. It seems an awful lot of money to spend to just keep the pain at a lower level, but given the amount I've spent on Imitrex shots and Relpax, it's a small price.
In the meantime, enjoy this picture of me with glasses, I've heard that duckface is all the rage... am I doing it right?
